The Green Peafowl (Pavo muticus)
This collection was inspired by the watercolor drawings of Thou Channy, Senior Artist at the Giant Puppet Project, to help raise awareness about conservation and the plight of endangered species in Cambodia. 20% of the sales price of each onesie goes directly to Fauna in Focus.
Though it might look like a peacock, the word peacock actually does not refer to any particular species. Peacock only refers to a male. A female would be a peahen, and a baby a peachick. There are actually three species of peafowl in the world. The one everyone knows as peacock is actually the Indian Peafowl. The Indian Peafowl is very common, and has been introduced all over the world. However the Green Peafowl is unique to Southeast Asia, and it is an endangered species. Any peacock feathers you see for sale as jewelry or souvenirs in Southeast Asia come from the endangered green peafowl, not the more common Indian Peafowl that we all know so well. The green peafowl looks very different, as it has a green neck instead of a blue neck, a taller and straighter crest instead of the pom-poms of the Indian peafowl. Also green peafowl females have the same beautiful color patterns as the males (though no long tail feathers). Green peafowl are frequently hunted for their meat and their beautiful tail feathers, and their natural habitats in the dry forests of Southeast Asia are being destroyed for firewood and farmland.
This onesie is made from lightweight, single-sided fleece (180 gsm). One size fits all. Design includes elastic wrists and ankles, center zip, hand warmers with webbed fingers, batwing sleeve feature, and an adjustable plumage tail that can be attached to your shoulders or turned down like a cape for days fit for a king or queen.
